WINTER MOOSE 2005-2006

This little bull is still carrying one side of his rack, sure wish it would drop now.

This bull was a block from our house. We originally saw it at 5am when we were out with the dogs for an AM break. He hung out around our neighborhood for a day or two.

I spotted these two bulls when I was out walking the dogs.

WINTER MOOSE 2005

December 24, 2005....We found this bull while out on a walk! Not often we get to watch a bull rubbing on trees.  He broke one little tree right in half from rubbing!  There were two other bulls bedded down near him.

December 8, 2005....Aaron found this moose in town one day! He sure wanted that pumpkin! Notice how he had to tip his head to get on the deck to get to it! This is one of my favorite pictures of an all American moose!   He ate the whole pumpkin!

December 05, 2005...
These are the two bulls we saw pushing each other around on November 28.

December 1, 2005... Aaron came across this nice bull today.   The bull didn't know which way to go once he got on the road.  He kept going around in circles, but eventually wondered off into another field.

November 28.... Aaron and I went out after a tip that some nice bulls were seen in South Anchorage.  We found these two little guys and enjoyed watching them for awhile. We took some good video of them pushing each other around, for awhile they were locked, but eventually pulled loose.

Notice the "bell" or dewlap under this bulls chin.  The purpose of the dewlap is debated.  Young bulls can have a dewlap dangling up to two feet long.  Older bulls often have a short dewlap having lost it to freezing in the cold winter months.

November 27.... Went out on a drive this morning and found moose everywhere.  This was one of the first clear and nice days since we got about ten inches of snow.  We saw at least ten moose, four of which were bulls for sure.  We couldn't really get close to any of them because they were on the other side of various fences.  We did get a picture of these two bulls though.

November 21 !!!!  Wow, what a day for moose! The pictures go from evening to morning! This bull here was so patient with us as we pulled up within five yards of him and took some photos.  It was so frustrating because our batteries kept on dying in the camera, but we managed to get a few good shots.  There was quite a bit of traffic, but he didn't seem to mind too much! What a perfect way to end a day full of moose! We saw six bulls today and two cows!

Went for another walk this afternoon, and found the big ol' bull from yesterday.  We stood in the trees for about thirty minutes and watched these two feed along then start pushing each other around.  What an amazing opportunity to witness these giant creatures!

One of our friends called us this morning and told us about the bull moose he'd seen on his way home from work.  We were out of the house within five minutes of the call with cameras and coffee.   We went and found the smaller bulls, and then went and found this larger bull.  He had a cow with him, but didn't seem to interested in her.  Aaron made a sneak....not really since he was in an open field, but he got a lot closer than I'd of liked.

This is the kind of torture I go through! I have to just turn my back whenever Aaron starts doing his moose stalking.  I don't mind getting fairly close when I have larger trees around, but an open field? Not really anywhere good to go.

These two little bulls were in a park not far from our home.  We watched them play for awhile in the field, one would up on his hind legs and lean on the other's back.  It was pretty fascinating.

November 20.... Went on a "moose walk" this weekend and were pleased to find we were the first ones to venture out in this area since the new snow.  We got about 7+ inches on Saturday the 19th.  We came across this cow and calf. They didn't seem nervous at all like the other moose in the area.

We found these three bulls out in a field on our way back to the truck.  One of the bulls was huge, with a wide rack.  The bulls pushed each other around for awhile, and didn't pay much attention to us.

November 13...Another successful "moose drive". Then we went on a walk and found two bulls bedded down!

Two bulls we found bedded in this field.

November 6....Went on a "moose drive" and found what we were looking for!

November 6, 2005- We went on a "moose drive" this morning and were rewarded with seeing two nice bulls. This big fellow was rather lopsided with his very nice palmed antler on one side and the single spike on the other! Notice the orange tag on his ear. We got to within 20 yards of him after he bedded down...He was just beautiful. This was the first snow of the year! We got about an inch in an hour.

The second bull we found on our morning drive, about a mile from the other. He was just hanging out in the Anchorage yard eating the berries of the bush. We watched him as he wandered through a couple or yards, jumped two fences, and then ran across the road and waltzed into the woods! O
