Moose Antlers

One lucky fellow.... snowshoeing to stay in shape for the coming hunting months, he has found a new hobby, or obsession.  Nothing like photographing the bulls then picking up their antlers.  Here are some accounts of his shed experience!
__________________________

I had been snowshoeing in late Nov. and saw this bull with others on a few occasions. On Dec. 1st I crested a ridge and he was standing alone with one antler. I looked for the antler where I had seen him the day before with no luck. I checked on him during a break from the search and he had no antlers. As he fed out of the draw I dropped in behind him and backtracked him to the antlers not 40 yards apart. What a score!

I After the excitement of the first find I decided to keep close tabs on the other bulls. After three weeks of stomping around I checked on the drop tine bull on Christmas Eve knowing I'd be back the day after Christmas. On my return trip I found that he had dropped, after a couple hours I was packing the antlers out.

The biggest bull of the group was the last to drop. After a couple days of photographing him, on Dec 28th I got on his tracks and they led to both antlers. I was packing them out by 10 am.

January 2005

Fellow Alaska shed hunter ~ known as Shoot2kill (aka Ryan)~ found this beauty on January 8, definitely  a freshie!

January 13, 2005.... Good eyes! Its amazing how such a nice sized antler can conceal itself.  What an awesome find!

A Hanger!!!! I can only dream of finding one of these! Ryan found this hanging out on February 6, 2005!

Shed hunting wouldn't be the same without a shed dog! Not that they can all find antlers, but they definitely can sense that you're excited when you find one! This antler was begging to be found!

Ryan and his wife went out to enjoy some sunshine in late February! Nothing better than bringing some antler home! This is an awesome little find!

After walking for only five minutes, he found this beauty just peaking out from under the snow! I remember the first time Ryan emailed me, he said something like, "wow, you guys go far for your antlers, I find most of mine within a couple hundred yards of the road!" Way to keep rubbing it in!  He found this one on March 12, 2005.

What a find!!! Amazing that such a huge antler can nearly be completely covered with snow! This shed weighed 26 lbs and had amazing brow tines. Too bad he couldn't find the match!!!

Tine down! How often does that happen? When you think about it, most antlers are dropped tine up! This was a good find; it sure gets harder to find sheds with the brown undercover of the spring!

May 1, 2005!  A well preserved antler, still has its color. Must of been buried in the snow! Notice...tine up!
This is incredible!!!! An awesome drop tine antler found in what looks like the early morning light, surrounded by the budding greens of spring!

Shiras Moose Antlers

These are some amazing Shiras Moose sheds found by "Oneguymontana" on Saturday January 7, 06!!  These would be hard to miss! No matches found yet, though. Success came in the form of 4 Shiras sheds and a whitetail!

Canadian Moose Sheds

Some hard to find sheds found in May of 2005 by NHshed!!! With snow, the color of the antler sure blends into the background!!

Two sheds dropped tine down. Maybe the sheds drop up-side-down over on the east coast!!! I haven't seen many sheds tine down!!!

"NHshed" was glad when the snow melted; I suppose you really couldn't miss that big antler in the open, but the one in the trees...that takes trained shed eyes!

Lucky, Lucky! Non-typical antlers are the best! This is a double palmed moose shed! Something I'd love to find!

Check out this double palm!!!

What a find! I wouldn't think to look in the water, but I suppose that moose cross the ice in winter, so why not drop an antler!

This is quite a haul! Somehow I've never made it out of the woods with more than two antlers. It might be a good thing...these suckers get heavy!

An antler below a rub....? Hardly ever happens in Alaska. NHshed has lots of these sheds below torn up trees!

Another shed near a whopper rub!

WOW!!! They sure grow some big moose in New Hampshire! Awesome non-typical points!

NHshed had to brag a little with this picture! Look at this shed collection!

2005-2006
The following photos are compliments of BroweBoy from South Jersey! The photos pretty much speak for themselves!

-January 2, 2006-
The shed on the left was stuck good in the snow, ice freezing it in! Makes the extraction all the more exciting!

I bet his heart was racing when he saw those whopper brow tines! He found the match 5 feet away, but most of the antler was broken, probably from fighting!

I feel sorry for the moose that dropped this antler....that had to hurt!

It looks like there is a little blood splatter around the base of the shed! I've followed many a blood trail and have yet to find an antler nearby!

Gunther's first antler!!! Cheers to shed dogs!

I can't really say much about all these sheds....they pretty much say it themselves! Awesome finds! I can't believe how big the East grows their moose! Canadian moose carry some serious antler! What a great find in the brook; well preserved no less!
