April 1, 2007

The next morning was pretty nice. There was blue sky, but the temps were chilly, and the snow line was pretty low on the hills! We put our HH bibs on to keep our lower half as dry as possible.  This was the second find of the day.  A great five point that is a year old and in good shape!

Then we dipped into some thick timber that we'd walked during the winter but there had been too much snow...This was a bummer to see!  A neat old buck that had a number of sticker points off the base! The tines were pretty much chewed off one side from the squirrels. We at least know to walk this earlier next year!

Off to a different area! We decided to go exploring!!!! The sun was out and we decided "what the heck"! Found an area that looked pretty good and headed out! Trying to spend some time in the bottoms since my knees were giving me grief!
I was super excited when we finally found one....I just saw the tine tips over the grass...

We were excited then and kept walking. We were in some sweet timber with rubs all over; Aaron saw the biggest deer rub he'd ever seen! We thought we were in HOT country! I about died when I nearly stepped on this literally!

I saw the base and knew that he was a whopper, though he'd been chewed pretty good! A shed from last year, but what is left tells a great story of what size he'd be!

His base is 4 3/4 base; the rest of the circumferences were 4.5; the eyeguard was chewed pretty good, but from the diameter of it we figure about five at least, the G2 is 11, the diameter of G3 is 3 3/4 at the base but the length is left to the imagination since it was chewed, and the mainbeam is left to the imagination as well, with absolute minimum measurements with what is left, we figure at least a 73 typical.... I'd of fallen over if I'd of found this fellow fresh!

The next morning we hit more bottom country, driving roads we'd never been on before and walking random areas....

I was so excited when Aaron found the first shed of the day!

Off to a great start, we were frustrated walking lots of country that looked good, but we never found anything. I about laughed when I found this!!! It was in front of Aaron, but he couldn't see it because of the timber. We were converging at a meeting point, so we were about thirty yards away! I felt so bad but I had to say I saw it.  I'd of been flaming mad had Aaron spotted one in front of me....lucky I have such a great husband.

Then it was his turn...he found the match!

I pretty nice and heavy four point set!

We were heading back to the truck at the end of our day....when Aaron hollered "whooo hooooo" he said he'd "found a pretty nice five point, and that he was looking for the match" I hollered back to him as I walked toward him...."me, too...I'm looking for the match!" I got to where he was standing, saw his antler, looked down and the match was right there!!!

So my side was a bit camouflaged...but still ...

Aaron's side is a nice five point with just a tiny chew mark on the main beam!

A fantastic way to end the day! Great tine length!

The side I spotted!  If it was anyone else I would have been shed hunting with, I'd have, of course, given this shed to them, but since they go home with both of us...I claimed it!

A super set and a great way to end our anniversary weekend! All in all, we found 22 whitetails this weekend, 2 old elk sheds, and 3 skulls

April 9, 2007

Aaron and I hit the hills in hopes of finding some elk antlers! We were fortunate to find a handful of old elk antlers. This one really had us fooled! We thought for sure it was fresh, but once we inspected it we realized it was probably a year old! In fantastic shape though!

April 16, 2007

Finally a nice day for shed hunting! The weather has been pretty wet on our days off so we were super excited that the forecast was for sunny weather!  This was a sweet little find in the woods!

Not a bad way to start the day! Sitting in the woods without even a chew mark on it!  We found two other year old sheds in the area but they were pretty chewed!

As the day progressed with temperatures got warmer and warmer!  I felt like I had ticks all over me, but haven't found any yet! This antler was under a fallen tree that was hung up; the buck must have been feeding when he dropped this antler! There was a tick just hanging out on G1.

So far we've only seen a couple sets of bear tracks and some bear scat this year!
